About MEL RAMOS
Mel Ramos is an American Pop artist best known for his paintings of female nudes alongside brand logos.
The side-by-side placement of women and familiar products serves as a commentary on the way modern culture shows the female body, seen as interchangeable between beauty and consumption.
Like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, Ramos was inspired by comic-book imagery for his graphic style, drawing caricatures and characters as he grew up.
Born on July 24, 1935 in Sacramento, California, Ramos studied art at Sacramento State College under his mentor and friend Wayne Thiebaud, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees.
The painter and printmaker's work is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.
